In the IT profession, an IT project manager is someone who oversees the progress of work projects assigned to them. They plan, execute and evaluate projects and work alongside people under them to meet goals and complete and deliver projects within the given budget and time frame. IT project managers don't just assign tasks to team members and set deadlines. Other than just being managers, they are also supervisor of sorts. They will go around the workplace to check with team members to check how they are doing and report to top management to inform them on the progress on work from planning to execution to completion. Many times when deadlines are fast approaching, IT project managers will have to get ready to perform some or many of the team's tasks.

Speaking of tools, project managers will also help team members obtain the necessary tools by requesting to the top management.
In the IT industry, much emphasis is given to timely and quality work. For this, the IT project manager needs to coordinate with team members. If a task cannot be completed within a given time period or if addition time is needed, the project manager can help perform what needs to be done to meet the deadline or else inform top management or stakeholders about it and request additional time. There are times clients come with additional work which project managers did not discuss with team members and did not anticipate. This the manager can use to request extension of a deadline.
As with quality work, the project manager does best to assess a completed task before ticking it off the to-dos. But he is not the only one checking on the quality of an accomplished work. He has a quality assurance team under him to check on projects and tasks.

To become an IT project manager, you must be ready to become a team player. You must be proactive, goal-oriented, result-oriented, responsible, highly committed and have leadership potentials.
You can also attend seminars given by though leaders in the IT industry and earn your credentials by joining professional groups and obtaining certification from accredited project management groups.
