Through a structured training program, the program participant learns coverage forms, Travelers underwriting philosophy and business unit products and services. Program participants will also shadow experienced underwriters and through observation begin to learn sales and negotiation skills. As knowledge base increases, participants are gradually given more underwriting responsibility and eventually an apprentice territory. Initially, the program participant handles new and/or renewal business under the direct supervision of their coach and/or manager. Upon successful completion of the program, the participant is granted underwriting authority and responsibility for a book of business. This job does not lead others. PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESP. (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS): Develop knowledge and understanding of underwriting, risk control and claim by observing and working with employees in these functions and learn how they interact and work with one another. Develop critical underwriting skills, through classroom, independent, and on-the-job training, including analysis of exposures, determination of appropriate insurance coverage and conditions, and the assignment of premium amounts Gather and review information on financial conditions, risk exposures, loss history, and economic trends that may affect the type of insurance coverage provided Visit agencies with an experienced underwriter to learn more about agency marketing and sales. Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE: Bachelor degree with a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater (preferred majors include Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or, Marketing); or minimum 2 years of relevant property casualty work experience (such as Risk Control, Claims, Finance, Underwriting support). A current/valid drivers license is required. Must be able to demonstrate or provide examples of strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present effectively in front of others. Must be able to demonstrate ability to think analytically about business problems and propose solutions. Background or coursework should demonstrate working knowledge of analytical tools and methodology, such as using spreadsheets and other software to analyze information and make recommendations. Background or coursework should include working in and/or understanding a sales and/or marketing environment. Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment Program participants must be able to travel to Hartford, Conn., and Saint Paul, Minn., for training and be able to stay for as much as three weeks at a time for training 2-4 times over the course of the training period.
